Theme: Living Prophets Teach Me to Choose the Right

Scripture: “O, remember, my son, and learn wisdom in the youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God.” Alma 37:35
Song: Stand for the Right, CS 159
Teaching Ideas:
1.       Briefly tell the children the story of Helaman’s stripling warriors (Alma 53:16-23) and show a picture.  Ask them what it means to be “true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted, “and what they can do to be true.  Show a picture of the current prophet and tell them that he has a message for all children.  Then sing the song and encourage them to find out what he wants them to do.
2.      Show four word strips with the words, “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when” printed on them.  Sing the song several times until the children can find the answers.
3.      Ask the children to listen to discover how many times you sing “be true.”  Tell them that this must be a very important message, since it is repeated four times.
4.      For review, ask the children to sing “be true” when these words occur, while you sing the rest of the song.  Ask them to stand up as they sing the words “stand for the right,” and sing with conviction and emphasis.
5.      Encourage the children to share experiences of times when it took corage to be true and stand for the right.

Theme: Jesus Christ Teaches Me to Choose the Right

Scripture: “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” John 13:15
Song: Song of your choice about Jesus Christ from the Children’s Songbook

Theme: I Choose the Right When I Am Baptized and Confirmed a Member of the Church

Scripture: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38
Song: When I Am Baptized, CS 103
Teaching Ideas:
1.      Ask the children to describe what the earth smells and looks like after a rainstorm.  Briefly tell the story of Noah, emphasizing that the earth was cleansed by the flood and no unclean thing was left on the earth.  Show a picture of a rainbow and tell of God’s promise about it. (Genesis 9:8-17) Show pictures of rain and of Noah and the ark.
2.      Sing the first verse and ask the children to discover what it is that I want to be as clean as the earth right after rain (my life). Sing the second verse and ask them what I must do to have my wrongs washed away.
3.      Display a rainbow made of five curved strips of color, wide enough to place words on them, to represent the phrase lines. As you sing the phrases of the song, move your hand across each strip of color.  Have the children trace the phrases in the air.
4.      Make the word strips in the shape of raindrops or small clouds.  Ask questions such as these:  “What do I like to look for?”  “What do I ponder on?” “What do I want my life to be as clean as?” “What else do I want to be?”  “Why do I want to be the best I can?”
5.      Invite a child who has recently been baptized to express the feelings he or she had at that time.  Share your testimony about the importance of baptism.

Theme: I Choose the Right by Living Gospel Principles

Scripture: “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.” 1 Nephi 3:7
Song: Nephi’s Courage, CS 120-121
Teaching Ideas:
1.      Display a chart with the words from 1 Nephi 3:7, beginning with “I will go…”  Ask the children to read it and to tell what they think it means.  Then tell them that you are going to sing a song that was written from the scripture, and ask them to listen for the words that are the same as the scripture.  Then sing the chorus.  Teach the chorus by asking the children questions, singing, and having them join in singing with you.
2.      Help the children notice the melody pattern of the chorus by pitch-level conducting or by moving their bodies as they sing.
3.      Ask them if they know what prophet is quoated in the scripture.  Briefly tell the sotry of how the Lord asked Lehi to send his sons to Jerusalem to get the brass plates and how Nephi accepted the commandment y using these words.  Ask them to listen as you sing the story to them.  Invited them to join in singing the chorus.
4.      Continue teaching the verses by asking questions and singing the part of the song that contains the answers.  Ask:  “What big word describes Nephi?” “Who were afraid to try?”  “Where was ‘wicked Laban’?” “:What did the Lord command Nephi to do?”
5.      Use pictures of Nephi obtaining the brass plates and Nephi building the ship.
6.      Help the children understand that they can also be courageous, like Nephi, in keeping the commandments of the Lord.

Theme: I Choose the Right by Living Gospel Principles

Scripture: “Wherefore, let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord.” 1 Nephi 3:16
Song: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man, CS 281 –or– a song of your choice from the Children’s Songbook
Teaching Ideas:
1.       Read Matthew 7:24-27 and invite discussion about the meaning of Jesus’ parable.  Then sing the song to the children and invite them to join you as they become familiar with the words and melody.
2.      Children will learn to sing this song quickly after hearing it a few times.  Encourage them to participate in the actions that are suggested; this will help them responding to the message of the song.
3.      When children know the song well, begin omitting one action word each time through the song (rock, rain, floods, etc.) Repeat the song over and over until all action words are sung silently.
4.      Show the children a rock and some sand and discuss which one is more sturdy to stand on.

August
Theme: I Choose to Fill My Life with Things That Invite the Spirit

Scripture: “If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” Articles of Faith 1:13
Song: I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus, CS 78-79
Teaching Ideas
1.      Tell the children that as we are growing up, we often look at people that we admire and want to be like them, such as sport heroes, favorite relatives, or television stars.  Sometimes theses people are worthy of our admiration, and sometimes they are not.  Ask them to think of someone who is always a good edample for them to follow.  Display a picture of Jesus and sing the song.
2.      Involve the children in listening and singing experiences by asking questions, using keywords, and showing pictures to illustrate the idea of the phrases.  Teach the verse one week and the chorus the next.
3.      In teaching the chorus, emphasize that it mentions three important messages that the still small voice will whisper.  Have the children listen for these messages, and post word strips as they find them.
4.      Have the children share examples of times when others showed love and kindness to them.  Show pictures of children doing kind acts and relate an experience when someone showed kindness to you.  Express your conviction that Jesus wants us to be loving to all.
